Accessibility Statement

As a school and a standard in education, Venerable Bede tries its best to be accessible to all kinds of users. To demonstrate this our site complies to the guidelines set down by the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) and validates as XHTML 1.0 while also meeting all the requirements for Level Triple-A Conformance to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WAI).

In addition to the measures taken to meet the above awards, extra measures have been taken to ensure that the site is accessible:

ALT (alternate text) tags are used to explain images to blind or partially sighted users and are provided on every image that has a significant meaning. Blank ALT tags are used on entirely decorative images so that more sophisticated accessibility software such as screen readers will acknowledge them as purely aesthetic and ignore them.

Our web site uses a mix of HTML and CSS to ensure that the look of Venerable Bede is consistent in all major web browsers and that accessibility software such as text only browsers and screenreaders are not hindered by the aesthetics of the page.

In the past Venerable Bede offered PDF versions of all pages so that visitors could easily print off only the essential information. On our new website we have used CSS to make sure that pages can simply be printed in the same manner without needing to download a large PDF file. Just press the print button!
