Course Aims:
The course consists of Practical activities and Theoretical aspects of physical activity.
Course Description:
The topics covered in the theory include the body systems, safety aspects and risk assessment, training programmes, drugs and hygiene, diet and performance. This part of the course is assessed by a 2 hour exam paper at the end of year 11 and is worth 40% of the total mark.
How will I learn:
Each student will be required to be assessed in four practical activities taken from different areas of the curriculum, e.g. games, athletics, dance, gymnastics and swimming. These are continually assessed by the teacher during the course and will also be assessed in a final moderation with an outside moderator. This work accounts for 60% of the final mark.
Each student will also be required to develop and follow their own personal training programme for six weeks in a sport chosen by themselves.
Possible Career Pathways:
GCSE Physical Education could lead to career opportunities in the following areas: Teacher, physiotherapist, coach, fitness instructor, grounds man, sports journalist, sports commentator, dietician, chiropodist, referee or umpire, sports retailing and professional sportsperson.
Subject summary: Key Stage 3 PE Programme of Study
During Key Stage 3 pupils will follow a programme of study that will include activities in Games; Gymnastics; Athletics; and Outdoor and Adventure.
Pupils will be able to supplement their involvement within the PE department by attending various extra-curricular clubs such as; Gymnastics; Judo; Trampolining; Table Tennis; as well as representation in school teams.
Subject summary:
Students will cover a range of activities that will include Invasion games, Athletic Activity, Net games, Aesthetic/Gymnastic activities that may include Trampolining, Gymnastics and Dance. Students will be expected to develop their understanding of health and fitness across all of the disciplines they undertake and be able to measure levels of fitness.
Students can also follow the Junior Sports Leaders Award to develop their abilities to coach, lead, and organise groups.
Subject summary: GCSE PE Programme of Study
Students are expected to fully complete aspects of both Practical and Theory. They will be constantly assessed and re-assessed to improve performance in practicals. In theory sessions students will study: Exercise and Training, Diet Health and Hygiene, Risk Assessment and Aspects of Safety, including injury prevention moving on to Sports Injury. Students are also required to produce an element of course work (10% of total exam mark) developing a Personal Exercise Programme.
