Course Title: Modern World History (Year 10)

Examination Board: Edexcel

Entry Requirements (if appropriate): None, but there is a heavy emphasis on independent research.  Also a requirement to produce extended pieces of writing.

Course Aims:

To help pupils gain a wider understanding of events from the past and the effects they hadon society then and the impact we feel today.

Course Description:

Pupils will study;

Why did war break out? International rivalry 1900–14
The peace settlement 1918–28
Why did war break out? International relations 1929–39
Germany 1918-1939
War and the Transformation of British Society c1903-28
USA 1919-41 - Controlled assessment

How will I learn?

The lessons will have interesting content which will make use of thinking skills activities as well as ICT and relevant video material. A residential field trip will be on offer in year 10.

Possible Career Pathways:

An understanding of History is useful for: armed forces, policeforce, the law, social work, journalism, local government, the Civil Service, marketing, tour guide, archaeologist, TV, film and theatre.

 

Course Title: Modern World History (Year 11)

Entry Requirements (if appropriate): None, but there is a heavy emphasis on independent research.  Also a requirement to produce extended pieces of writing.

Course Aims:

• Actively engage in the process of historical enquiry to develop as effective and independent candidates and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds
• Develop their knowledge and coherent understanding of selected periods, societies and aspects of history
• Develop an awareness of how the past has been represented, interpreted and accorded significance for different reasons and purposes
• Develop the ability to ask relevant questions about the past and to investigate them critically using a range of sources in their historical context
• Organise and communicate their historical knowledge and understanding in creative and different ways and reach substantiated judgments
• Recognise that their historical knowledge, understanding and skills help them understand the present and also provide them with a basis for their role as responsible citizens, as well as for the possible further study of history.

The Inter War years 1919-39, Germany 1918-45, How was British Society changed 1890-1918?, Terrorism – Controlled Assessment

Course Aims:

  • Acquire, through studying a range of appropriate sources, knowledge and understanding of selected aspects of the ancient world

  • Develop an awareness of the conflicting nature of source evidence for the ancient world

  • Develop and apply analytical and evaluative skills at an appropriate level

  • Make an informed, personal response to the material studied.

Course Description:

Pupils will study;

Alexander the Great 356-323BC. The Origins of Rome: The Kings 753-508BC.
Cleopatra and her impact on Roman politics. 69-30BC, Ancient Egypt 3000-1000BC –Controlled Assessment.

Subject summary: Year 7 History Programme of Study

The theme of Year 7 History is ‘Life in Medieval Times’. Your child will study the following topics: How medieval monarchs kept control; Life in town and country; Native Americans and Industrial/Victorian England.  The aim of these topics is to enable your child to develop a sound knowledge of both English history and the wider world during the medieval period.  By investigating  past events they will be able to understand  issues of social conflict such as class inequality as well as religious conflict and co-operation. At the end of Y7 your child should be better informed, able to make reasoned judgments and debate their point of view, whilst appreciating that the opinion of others is equally valid.  They will develop some valuable transferable skills: information source analysis, classification, research, essay-writing, argument construction, group-work, debate and discussion skills.

 

 

 

 

Subject summary: Year 8 History Programme of Study

The Theme of Year 8 History is Modern World History. This year your child will cover the following topics: The British Empire, The Slave Trade, Civil Rights, Reformation, The Tudors, The English Civil War, and Plague and witchcraft.
The aim of these topics is to enable your child to develop a sound knowledge of the past events that have had a significant impact upon present political systems and modern society.  At the end of Y8 your child should be well informed, able to make reasoned judgments, debate their point of view and be able to draw parallels between past events.  They will develop some very valuable transferable skills: information source analysis, classification, research, essay writing, argument construction, group-work, debate and discussion skills.

 

 

 

 

 

Subject summary: Year 9 History Programme of Study

In History your child will cover the following topics: Twentieth Century Conflicts, The Holocaust and Great Depression, Suffragettes and Edwardian England. The aim of these topics is to enable your child to develop a sound knowledge of the world today.  By investigating recent past events they will be able to understand major issues of global conflict such as Genocide and Total War. At the end of Y9 your child should be well informed, able to make reasoned judgments and debate her point of view, whilst appreciating that the opinion of others is equally valid.  They will develop some very valuable transferable skills: information source analysis, classification, research, essay writing, argument construction, group-work, debate and discussion skills.
