Course Aims:
These qualifications specifically aim to develop learner's knowledge and understanding of the ICT sector; to develop learner's skills, knowledge and understanding in contexts that are directly relevant to employment situations, thereby enhancing their employability within the ICT sector ; to develop learner's ability to work autonomously and effectively in an ICT context ; to enable learners to develop knowledge and understanding in specialist areas of ICT, and demonstrate the skills needed to participate in the operation and development of ICT specific or ICT non-specific business organisations; to encourage progression to access further or higher education programmes or occupational training on a full-time or part-time basis; to encourage progression by assisting in the development of skills, knowledge and understanding that learners will need to enter employment or enhance their current employment status; to promote interaction between employers, centres and learners by relating teaching and assessment to real organisations.

The qualification is assessed by the candidate’s production of portfolio assignments. Two units are examined.

Course Aims:
This GCSE course in Information and Communication Technology offers a unique opportunity in the curriculum for candidates to identify and solve real problems by designing information and communication systems in a wide range of contexts relating to their personal interests. Information and Communication Technology develops candidates' interdisciplinary skills and their capacity for imaginative, innovative thinking, creativity and independence. The specification encourages the investigation and study of Information and Communication Technology in a variety of contexts. In these contexts the candidates are given opportunities to acquire competence, capability and critical skills through the creation, implementation, use and evaluation of a range of information and communication systems. Candidates from all cultures and both genders can develop their interest in, enjoyment of, and critical reflection about information technology as an integral part of modern society.
Course Description:
The course uses a range of assessment techniques to enable the candidate achieve through examination and practical/investigative work. Sixty per cent of the marks are based on internally-assessed controlled assignments which allow the candidates to experience an appropriate variety of roles relevant to information technology: user, designer, maker, manager and client. Assessment through controlled assignments will also enable centres to respond positively and quickly to developments in the field of information and communication technology. The remaining forty per cent of the final assessment will be by externally set examinations testing the full ability range.
How will I learn:
Candidates undertake preparation on a wide range of ICT related topics culminating in two examination papers Unit 1 Understanding ICT and Unit 3 ICT in Organisations. Candidates are also required to submit 2 controlled assignments Unit 2 Solving Problems in ICT and Unit 4 Creating Multimedia Solutions.

Pupils have been exploring the use of ICT in a commercial setting. They have been developing their skills and understanding through practical tasks and coursework assignments. Pupils have been demonstrating their ability to analyse, design and implement ICT systems for use in a range of environments including those of industry, commerce and the community.
A wide and balanced range of topics are examined in KS4, to further develop pupils’ knowledge. Year 10 pupils will follow courses appropriate to their needs. Sets 1 to 3, for both Red and White sides of the timetable, will complete 2 exams worth 20% for their GCSE each and 2 controlled assignments worth 30% each. Set 4s for both Red and White are to complete two piece of coursework.
