Spanish

At Venerable Bede CE Academy, we believe that the study of a foreign language, Spanish, will broaden horizons, develop cultural knowledge and understanding and foster transferable skills such as confidence, communication, problem solving and creativity.  Learning Spanish will enable pupils to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing, focused on familiar and routine matters, using their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary. As pupils advance from Year 7 to Year 11, their competence in the four communication skills will deepen.

DEEP Curriculum Overview

In lower school, pupils will study, in line with our DEEP curriculum, a variety of different topics such as family, lifestyle, free time, school, town, food and holidays. Pupils will begin to develop their skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating in Spanish.  They will also be introduced to key grammatical structures to enable them to manipulate the language for communication. Therefore pupils will feel confident giving opinions and justifications in Spanish and using two different tenses.  By the end of lower school, pupils will have extended this knowledge by producing and understanding more complex language and using four different tenses.  Pupils will be assessed in the four skills, including translating from and into Spanish.  These assessments will be tailored to help pupils progress and will give them a solid foundation when extending their learning to upper school and beyond. In GCSE Spanish we follow the EDUQAS specification.
