The transition from primary school to secondary school can be a daunting journey. At The Venerable Bede Academy, we always try to make the move enjoyable. pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 visit to experience ‘Taster Days’ in the summer term. Also during the Summer Term, the Head of Year will make visits to every feeder primary school to get to know pupils, answer their questions and gain knowledge of their abilities.
In July, before the end of Year 6, all our future pupils will come together for a day’s visit. During this day, pupils experience a variety of lessons, meet staff and prefects and have lunch in the Bistro. Each one of our prefects will ‘look after’ and mentor a small group of new pupils on the day’s visit and this will continue when they start The Venerable Bede in September. The prefects accompany the Year 7 pupils to each lesson for the first week and ensure that they are happy and settle into the new routine quickly. Parents/Carers will be invited to school towards the end of the first half term to meet their child’s tutor. Tutors will be able to give information regarding pupils’ assessment and their transition into secondary school.
Throughout the school year we also invite Year
5 and Year 6 pupils into The Venerable Bede Academy to sample a range of activities and subjects that will be on offer after they have transferred to secondary school.
From Wicked Wizards in English to Wormeries in Science, from Magical Muffins in Food Technology to Scintillating Spanish songs, the pupils enjoy every minute of their time with us.
They arrive quite nervous but excited and quickly relax in the warm and friendly atmosphere of the school.
Not only do the primary pupils benefit from these visits but the many Venerable Bede pupils who volunteer to help run the activities and events also develop their skills in working with younger pupils.
